Rights and Responsibilities of Library Patrons

Lately the Facilities Subcommittee of the Literary and Library Committee has reinvigorated the Rules and Responsibilities pamphlet of the Hart House Library. There are copies of the pamphlet available for your perusal in the Library, and below is the information it contains:

I. Purpose of the Hart House Library: The Hart House Library is a shared space that welcomes students, staff, senior members, and the community at large. It is a place for reading, writing, and quiet reflection, as well as Hart House literary events.

II. Rights of Hart House Library patrons:
- Ask a Library patron to observe their responsibilities and the rules.
- Ask staff (at the Porter's Desk) for help when library patrons fail to observe their responsibilities and the rules.
- Enjoy the Library for the above purpose, secure in the knowledge that the patrons' responsibilities and the library rules will be enforced.

III. Responsibilities of Hart House Library patrons:
- Guard your belongings, as theft is common.
- Respect the Library furniture.
- Respect the Library books.
- Respect other Library patrons.

IV. We request that you please:
- Do not sleep in the Library.
- Keep food and drink outside the Library.
- Keep feet and footwear off all furniture.
- Do not lie on the couches.
- Do not rearrange the furniture.
- Keep all furniture, lamps, and books in the Library.
- Do not attempt to change light bulbs.
- Place used books neatly on the shelving cart at the front of the Library.
- Do not hide books for personal use. This is not a lending library - the books will be here when you return.
- Refrain from using your cellular phone inside the Library.
- Enjoy conversations outside the Library.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Le Mot Juste Discussion Thread

As a subcommittee of the LitLib, Le Mot Juste can post here on the Hart House Library blog, and thus join in the internet phenomenon that is changing the very nature of writing as a hobby and profession.

So here it is: the Le Mot Juste discussion thread. Thoughts, musings, ideas, questions, tips, rants... anything to do with creative writing, post it here!

I've got some questions below to get the party started; answer as many as you feel like. Or don't answer any and start your own topic. Just keep it in this thread, please.

  • What is your favourite novel? story? poem? movie? TV show? play?
  • Who is your favourite author and why? Which well-known author do you have the most in common with? Is there an author you aspire to imitate?
  • What is your favourite genre to write in?
  • What aspect of writing do you excel most at?
  • What is your greatest challenge as a writer?
  • What is your highest aspiration as a writer?
  • What is the best writing advice?
  • What are you writing now?
Le Mot Juste is a Hart House club and a subcommittee of the Hart House Literary and Library Committee. Our primary aim is to provide a friendly, encouraging environment for Hart House members to share their writing and receive constructive feedback. We meet every Friday at 4:00 in the Bickersteth Room (third floor of Hart House, across the hall from the Billiard Room). New members are always enthusiastically welcomed. If you have any questions about Le Mot Juste, please email me at banduraqueen@yahoo.ca

Grand Design!

Grande Design is the 2006-07 Hart House Theme...

and you can be sure that the Literary and Library committee is working hard to keep up our end of the deal.

The Facilities subcommittee has just ordered plenty of new titles that will soon hit the shelves of the library. We're excited to continue bringing interesting, provocative and fresh literature to the library. We acquire new publications twice a year (fall and winter) so please let us know what you want to see in your library! A new computer catalogue system is also available for library patrons to search their favourite titles. Currently located in the back alcove, this system will soon take up its permanent home at the front of the library.

We want to know: What do you think makes up the Grand Design of a great library? Please drop us a note!

Check back often to stay up to date on all your Literary and Library events!

Best,

John Appleby
HH Library Curator

New books and a new book section

About a dozen new books have arrived at the library and will be added to the collection over the next several days. Some titles to look out for include: Michael Winter's The Big Why, Elisabeth Harvor's Excessive Joy Injures the Heart, Leonard Cohen's Book of Longing, and Flavia Cosma's Leaves of a Diary.

Over the summer, Hart House Library will be launching its first-ever Philosophy & Religion section, to be located beside the Generalities section. Please drop off any titles that you want to see in our collection in the Suggestions Box at the front of the library. Every recommendation will be considered. Thanks for your input!
